The Dalton Education Foundation will begin the process for awarding the Karen Lightbody Kirkman Piano Scholarship in early January. This scholarship is open to any Dalton Public School student who is studying piano, and it provides $500 towards the winner’s piano lessons. It is designed to encourage a talented piano student to use his or her talents for the benefit of the community.
The scholarship was established in 1996 in memory of the late Karen Kirkman, a 1962 Dalton High School graduate, who donated her musical abilities for many years to the Dalton community through school, church and other civic performances.
“It was Karen’s wish that this piano scholarship help others take her place by giving back to their communities the gift of their piano talents,” says Kevin Wright, president of the Dalton Education Foundation.
Beginning Jan. 8, application packets will be available from music teachers in the Dalton Public Schools. Application information may also be obtained by calling the Dalton Education Foundation at 706-278-5427.
