The first several hours of Amber Hamrick’s labor went smoothly.
“Up until the time to push everything was going fine. But then her heartbeat went through the floor. I ended up having to have a C-section. There was a knot in her umbilical cord that was cutting off circulation,” Hamrick said. “But the doctors got her out quickly, and she’s good.”
On Tuesday morning Hamrick was still sore from the surgery, but she gleamed with pride as she held her first child, Kyra Leigh Hamrick, while family and friends looked on.
The girl, who weighs 7 pounds, 2 ounces and is 21 inches long , was born at 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday, making her the first child born at Hamilton Medical Center in 2013.
Kyra’s status as the first baby of the New Year earned her and her mom a gift basket full of baby goods from the hospital’s gift shop, a celebratory dinner from the hospital and a second gift basket from the March of Dimes, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
“I really wasn’t expecting any of this. I wasn’t even aware of it. I was lying here earlier and I asked my mom ‘Why am I getting all this stuff?’” said Hamrick, a Murray County resident. “She said ‘It’s New Year’s Day, and you had the first baby.’”
Hamrick’s mother, Liana Thomason, brought her to the hospital and stayed with her during the delivery.
“I was with my sister when she had twins, so this was my second time with somebody in the delivery room,” she said.
She said that as Hamrick was being taken to the delivery room, the staff was excited about the possibility of seeing the first baby of the New Year.
“They were all great,” she said.
