The driver’s license of 37-year-old Christopher Wright was found beside a body inside a burned-out mobile home near Fort Mountain that caught fire Tuesday evening, officials said.
Capt. John Cherry with the Murray County Sheriff’s Office said finding the license means officials “are just about sure who the body is.” They are waiting on a report from a state medical examiner to confirm the body is that of Wright. The body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
“What we know is that Wright didn’t show up for work the next day,” Cherry said, “so we’re supposing it’s him.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown and officials say they’re treating the mobile home like a crime scene.
“We’re also waiting on the state fire marshal for a report,” Cherry said. “As far as the actual cause of death — whether it was caused by the fire or possibly something else — we won’t know that for awhile. He had some head trauma. We’re not sure from what yet. I’m not sure how long (the autopsy) will take, but when the report is done we will know more.”
Officials with the GBI were brought in by the sheriff’s office for their expertise and equipment.
Several neighbors reported a “boom” or “pop” when the mobile home first caught fire on Hensley Road. Cherry said when firefighters arrived at 7:30 p.m. the home was fully involved in fire.
Nearby resident Ed Gregg told The Daily Citizen on Wednesday a man had lived there for about a year.
