Decision coming soon on North Murray football coach

A search that netted North Murray High 77 applicants for its vacant football head coaching position is expected to come to an end Thursday, when the school’s administration is scheduled to present the Murray County school board with a candidate for approval.

Murray County Schools released a list of applicants for the position Monday night after receiving an open records request from The Daily Citizen. During the search for Murray County High’s football coach last year, Principal Gina Linder released a list of three finalists for the position.

North Murray officials interviewed seven candidates for the position vacant since Larry Cornelius was fired in early March, following three seasons as the school’s only coach. North Murray administration has not released the names of finalists.

One name on the list of applicants likely to be familiar to area fans, and Murray County fans in particular, is that of David Gann. An assistant coach in Ringgold, Gann was a finalist for Murray County’s top football position last year before the school filled the vacancy from within by promoting assistant coach John Hammond.

Gann, a 1990 graduate of Ringgold, also has served as an assistant at Southeast Whitfield and Northwest.

“All I know for sure is that I interviewed, but I haven’t heard from anyone down there,” Gann said when reached on Monday night. “I have heard a lot of names, but mostly it is just rumors. I was hoping you had some news for me.”

Southeast assistants Chad Brewer and Chad Murray and Northwest assistant Jim McGrew were also on the list of applicants, as was Calhoun offensive coordinator Mike Davis.

North Murray Principal Maria Bradley, Assistant Principal Keith Swilling and athletic director Roger Rainey culled the list from 77 to nine before bringing in the final seven for interviews. Rainey said the number of applicants was daunting, but he expects a decision to be made today.

“It was very encouraging,” Rainey said. “I don’t know if it is just the economy, but it was exciting and a little overwhelming. There were several different states, and there were a lot of really good applicants. We wanted someone with coordinator experience and someone who would fit our school and the athletes and kids that we have.”

The Murray County school board is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. Thursday for a “work session,” and that meeting will include personnel decisions, according to the agenda published on the board’s website.
