At least 1,700 people in Whitfield and Murray counties were without power after high winds and heavy rains blew through Tuesday afternoon in a brief storm that was quickly followed by clearing skies.
Several downed trees and other damage caused traffic delays in several areas. Traffic as of just before 5 p.m. was backed up on Walnut Avenue while crews responded to a non-working traffic light at the intersection of Dug Gap Road and Shugart Road and dealt with area power outages.
Some Murray County residents also reported getting hail, and 911 dispatchers said they were extremely busy after the winds knocked down several trees.
A spokesman for Georgia Power said about 1,100 people were without power in the Antioch Road area Tuesday afternoon while there were spotty outages elsewhere.
Dalton Utilities spokeswoman Lori McDaniel said crews are still assessing the situation.
“We have several poles down because of the winds, and we have two circuits that are down,” she said.
North Georgia EMC spokesman Jeff Rancudo said a combined 600 customers in Whitfield and Murray counties were without power as of about 5 p.m. Tuesday.
“The crews are out working very hard to try to get everybody back on as quickly as they can,” Rancudo said.
