Murray teen to compete for Boys & Girls Clubs’ ‘Youth of the Year’

CHATSWORTH — Courtney Bauer is a true example of an extraordinary young woman. At age 16, she has been selected to compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Georgia Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation.

Bauer is a sophomore at North Murray High School and is a three-year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs. She has a 3.25 grade point average, was nominated for the Governor’s Honors Program and is an active member of the youth group at her local church. She also volunteers at a nursing home where she sings, plays board games and talks with the elderly residents. Bauer also volunteers with the Saturday Sack Program providing sack lunches on Saturdays to people in need.

Melissa Adams, her Honors English and drama teacher, said, “Courtney has excelled in my drama class, going above and beyond the classroom requirements, often encouraging others to excel.”

As the Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Gordon, Murray and Whitfield Counties, Bauer is among hundreds of local youth across the country recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. This program was founded over 60 years ago through the generosity of Reader’s Digest.

If Bauer wins at the state competition, she will compete for the title of Southeast Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship from Reader’s Digest. The five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September to compete for the title of National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and is installed by the president in an Oval Office ceremony.

“Courtney is a strong young woman with a bright future,” said Robbie Slocumb, chief professional officer of the area Boys & Girls Clubs. “We are proud of her and know she will represent us well in the state competition.” JC Penney at Walnut Square Mall has generously donated business attire for Courtney to wear during the weekend event.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Gordon, Murray and Whitfield Counties provides after school and summer programs for kids in such areas as leadership, health and fitness, the arts, educational and career development, life skills and opportunities for youth. The clubs, with five locations in the three counties, have more than 1,500 members. Visit www.bgcgmw.org to learn more about Boys & Girls Clubs.
