Ask Mike Padgett why he’s running for a part-time magistrate judge position in Murray County and he’ll start talking about the importance of a youth apprenticeship program in the city.
The program he envisions isn’t specific to the magistrate judge role, but it’s something he said led him to thinking about running for office.
“I just got a vision, and not only a vision, but kind of a burden for the youth in the community,” he said.
Murray County needs to find ways to keep its talent at home and offer them job opportunities, Padgett said, and what better way to do that than to provide training to young people who will be the future firefighters, police officers, lawyers and other civil servants of the community? In fact, he said he hopes the idea gets started even if he isn’t elected and that other community leaders join in to support it and develop details, including how to pay for it.
The post 2 magistrate job is a part-time position for a few days a month. The July 31 election will either decide a winner or initiate a runoff. Also running for the nonpartisan position are Jim Beavers, Leroy Green, Eric Hooker, Kevin Jones and John Waters.
Padgett, 50, has lived in Murray County for 22 years. He and wife Susan attend Mountain View Baptist Church and have a 25-year-old daughter, Whitney, and 23-year-old son, Jon Michael. Padgett graduated from Dalton High School and later from Lincoln Memorial University, which he attended on a baseball scholarship. He owns Colortex in Chatsworth.
State funds will provide training for whoever is elected to the position, and Padgett said that person will likely look heavily to whoever is elected to the chief magistrate position for guidance.
