CHATSWORTH — High school prom might be one of the most important social events of many teenagers’ lives, but it can be expensive.
Murray County Band Boosters wants to take that problem and turn it on its head — all while raising money for the school’s band program. The boosters are continuing a weekend sale of more than 150 prom dresses and accessories gathered through consignors from across the region. Some of the dresses are brand new, but even the used are less than three years old and in good condition, organizers said, and all cost far less than they would in most stores.
Lauren Langford, a senior color guard member, said several students at Murray County High School will struggle with paying for formal wear and other prom necessities this year because of a struggling economy and high unemployment.
“Some of them are seniors,” said Langford. “They’ve got to have a job on their own because their parents don’t.”
The purpose of the sale is to make prom dresses affordable to area high school students, but anyone can shop, said boosters president Kaye Osby. Sizes range from extra, extra small to 24, and there are dresses in a variety of shapes, colors and styles. Prices vary, but all are deeply discounted. For example, a multi-colored Jovani that would normally sell for $500 is $250, said boosters vice president Delaine Langford. Dressing rooms will be available.
Osby said consignors will get 70 percent of the sale price while the boosters will collect the rest. Consignors set their own prices.
Sponsors for the event are Carol’s Fashions, The Facial Studio at Chelsea’s, The Ice Castle, Hartsell & Associates, Whatz Hot Dalton, Celebrations Unlimited by Bond, Mary Kay: Stacy Pulliam Knowles, Hi-Line By Great Cutz, Charming Creations by Pam Campbell and Mbellish Salon.
