John Waters wears the word “veteran” on the back of his campaign T-shirt.
The Murray County native and former Navy hospital corpsman is running for the nonpartisan, part-time Murray County magistrate judge post 2 position along with Jim Beavers, Leroy Green, Eric Hooker, Kevin Jones and Mike Padgett.
Waters is touting his experience in several areas including the armed forces from 1989-1993, where in his role as a Navy corpsman — similar to a medic job in the Army — he worked with the Marines and traveled throughout the Caribbean. Self-employed in several ventures since 1996, he is the owner of Auto Tech in Chatsworth, the town he’s called home for 25 years.
The 42-year-old has three children, ages 12 (Ashlee), 10 (Gage) and 17 months (Morgan), along with parents, cousins, aunts, uncles and other relatives in Murray County. He attends Chatsworth Church of God.
Waters said that even though the phrase sounds cliché, he’s always wanted to do something for the community. He said he’s good at settling disputes between people and has plenty of experience doing that as an employer, friend and in other positions.
One problem he said especially bothers him is that people without means who hire an attorney don’t always get a fair deal. Waters said none of that will matter to him as a judge, nor will anything else about someone’s personal circumstances be important.
“What matters to me is if someone has been wronged that it be made right,” he said.
The post 2 magistrate position is part time for a few days a month. The July 31 election will either decide a winner or initiate a runoff.
