ATLANTA —
A federal judge is taking senior status next year, leaving another opening at the U.S. District Court in Atlanta.
Eton native Judge Charles Pannell Jr. of the Northern District of Georgia will take senior status after he turns 67 on Jan. 24. That means he will be eligible for a reduced caseload and that his slot will be opened for a new federal appointment. The district already has two other judicial vacancies.
Pannell told The Daily Report that he notified the White House and other officials of his decision.
A former federal prosecutor, Pannell was elected district attorney of the Conasauga Circuit in 1976 and three years later became a Superior Court judge. He was appointed to the federal bench in 1999 by President Bill Clinton.
