The Snake Creek Gap Mountain Bike Time Trials will return to the Pinhoti Trail on Saturday for the third and final race of the 2013 event.
The event’s three races — one was also held on the first Saturday of January and February — are hosted by the Northwest Georgia Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (NWGA-SORBA). They’re expected to bring more than $90,000 in tourism and economic impact to Dalton.
Riders have both 17- and 34-mile options for the races, which finish at the trade center.
“February brought in 354 racers from all over the United States and Canada,” said Conrad Fernandez, president of NWGA-SORBA. “Out of those 354, 207 riders still qualify for the coveted belt buckle. In order to qualify for the buckle, riders must complete the 34-mile time trial during all three races of the year.”
The belt buckle is being sponsored by the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau.
During the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the event has included a North vs. South-themed challenge, with teams divided by region. After the races in January and February, the North continues to lead the South in the friendly competition.
After the final race in March, the trophy will be awarded to the winning team and will be on display at the Dalton Freight Depot at 350 S. Depot St.
This is the ninth year the Snake Creek Gap Time Trials are being held on the Pinhoti. To learn more, visitnwgasorba.org.
