Plans for park skate forward

DALTON — Dalton Middle School student Victor Cervantes says no matter how young you are, if you’ve got an idea to make Dalton better you should present it to the City Council.

“Definitely. Go for it,” he said Monday night at City Hall.

On March 15, he asked the City Council to build a public skate park for the area’s many skateboarders, noting that the city currently has no such parks and many young people skate on streets or empty parking lots.

On Monday, he listened as parks and recreation department director Ronnie Nix outlined plans for such a park to appreciative council members. The council asked Nix to study the proposal.

Nix said that a skate park would take about 5,000 square feet and that both Lakeshore Park and James Brown Park have enough empty space and would both be good locations. He said the total cost of such a park would be about $100,000.

Mayor pro tem Dick Lowrey said the next step is for city financial officials to review the plans. He said the council could vote on the proposal as early as its April 19 meeting.

City officials said Cervantes deserves much of the credit for the city moving on the project.

“I’d like to congratulate him on the job he did at the last meeting and during the times we’ve gotten together,” Nix said. “The way he handled himself and the way he presented the information, he’s to be commended.”

Nix said that if the council approves the plan he will work with local skateboarders to design the specific features it will have. Cervantes said he believes there will be plenty of people interested in helping design the park.
