The man who police believe robbed the Regions Bank on Thornton Avenue Monday left most of his loot in his tracks. And police are still searching for the alleged robber.
“We were able to recover most of it. After he left the bank, a dye-pack that was with the money exploded, and he dropped it,” Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said.
Frazier said the department is not releasing how much was taken from the bank.
“There may still be some money out there with red dye on it. That’s obviously an indication that something isn’t right,” he said.
A black male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 7 inches in height, walked into the bank at about 1:30 p.m. Monday and gave a note to a teller demanding money and indicating he was armed. He fled on foot. The man wore a long dark wig with a white and black hat and gray jacket and large sunglasses. He wore red Georgia Bulldogs sweatpants or pajama pants and carried a black bag or purse.
Police cordoned off part of the Downtown Motor Inn for almost two hours after the robbery after at least one witness said someone matching the description of the robber ran there. Police later searched two of the rooms but did not find the suspect. Frazier said they now believe the robber wasn’t there.
“We think somebody saw someone go into that room around that time who matched the description of the suspect, but it was not our suspect,” Frazier said.
Frazier said detectives are still investigating the robbery. Anyone with information on this incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to contact Det. Jason Bishop at (706) 278-9085, ext. 214.
In an email, Evelyn Mitchell, with Regions Bank corporate communications, said the bank does not comment on ongoing robbery investigations.
“We are working closely with local law enforcement to investigate the matter,” she wrote.
