The Tunnel Hill City Council plans to spend significantly less in 2013 than it did in 2012. But City Manager Blake Griffin said the cuts won’t affect services.
The council held a public hearing on a $622,000 budget Tuesday night. That’s a large decrease from the $684,000 budgeted for 2012 and the $714,000 the city actually spent. Griffin said the actual operating budget will remain “pretty flat.”
“We had a lot of one-time things we did in 2012 that we don’t plan on doing this year,” he said. “For instance, we spent $17,000 to refurbish a vehicle.”
Griffin said the city plans no cuts in positions or services. He said it also plans no new major purchases or projects.
“Public safety is, by far, our largest outlay. We will spend $295,000 on public safety,” Griffin said.
The city will dip into its fund balance for $102,000 to balance the budget.
The city does not have a property tax, getting its revenue from its share of the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) and other sources.
The City Council is scheduled to vote on the 2013 budget on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. The City Council meets at city hall at 201 G. Vaughn Highway.
