This month the third installment of the Spigel Concert Series will feature a Dalton favorite: Dave Pope along with his trio will be performing with vocalist India Galyean at the Creative Arts Guild on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The Spigel Concert Series, now in its second year, is sponsored by The Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia and Wells Fargo. Through their generous support many of the concerts are free and at a nominal ticket price. General admission for the Dave Pope Trio is $10 and guests are asked to bring snacks or a picnic with beverages to the Jonas Performance Hall to enjoy during the concert.
Often performing at the Guild on guitar, this performance features Pope on drums, which is actually his first instrument. He will be joined by Atlanta-based musicians Louis Heriveaux on piano and Tommy Sauter on bass. They will be featuring jazz and R&B standards with Galyean on vocals as well as tunes from his newly released CD, “The Dave Pope Trio – You and the Night and the Music.”
Pope is a multi-instrumentalist performing on drums, guitar and bass guitar. He is also a producer of live bands performing in various venues including public concerts, jazz clubs and private functions. His bands range from duos to quintets and often feature some of the finest vocalists in the Southeast.
Pope grew up in Bowling Green, Ohio, in a family of virtuoso musicians. His parents, David and Ann Pope of Chattanooga, are both professional classical pianists and his brother Mike is a world-renowned bassist, pianist and producer.
His brother Pete is a pianist and performs in the Austin, Texas, area.
Dave began his music career at age 14 playing in garage bands and filling in for students at Bowling Green State University when they were double booked for performances. During his college years, Dave performed in the Toledo, Ohio, area with some of the best musicians in the country. From there he had a brief stint in Chicago and has since been performing in the Atlanta and Chattanooga areas.
He is also proficient in the studio and has produced several recording projects to augment his performance career.
Notable live performances include: Dave Pope Trio with vocalists India Galyean, Becky Jenkins, and Tom Horner; Pope Brothers Band with Mike Pope; produced and performed on collaboration with Mike Pope and Randy Brecker; performed with Kinhaven Youth Orchestra featuring Dave Brubeck; master class performance with Marian McPartland; multiple performances with Ike Stubblefield, Winston Walls, Gene Parker, Jimmy Cook, Chris Buzzelli, Akio Sasajima, Robert Crabtree, Rusty Holloway, Alan Wyatt, Tommy Sauter, Keith Brown (drums), Karen Briggs, Larry Fuller, Mark Keiswetter and Dan Faehnle.
Vocalist Galyean is a native of Resaca and moved to New York City right out of college. It was there she and her husband Hugh lived and made their home for eight years.
While there, Galyean worked steadily as a professional singer and actress. She has appeared in the national tour of “Shenandoah” playing the lead role of Anne, on ABC’s “Good Morning America” promoting Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing and in many of New York’s well-known rooms including the Iridium, Irving Plaza, Tavern on the Green and The Russian Tea Room.
One of her more interesting gigs was singing for Ozzy Osborn’s 50th birthday party at the Beverley Hills Hotel. She has worked with many well-known musicians including Lee Alexander (bass player with Norah Jones), cabaret great Steve Ross and Monty Powell (Nashville song writer/producer).
Galyean was awarded the prestigious Bistro Award for Outstanding Vocalist recognizing her work on New York’s cabaret circuit where she shared the stage that year with legends Barbara Cook and Eartha Kitt.
The Galyeans and their three children now reside on her family farm where the Civil War Battle of Resaca took place.
Originally from Memphis, Tenn., bassist Tommy Sauter received a degree in jazz performance from the University of Tennessee in 2003. He currently resides in Atlanta where he is in demand as a sideman. He has performed with noted jazz artists such as Donald Brown, Vincent Herring, Victor Goines, Wess Anderson, Philip Harper, Marty Morrell, Sachal Vasandani, Marcus Printup, Bernard Wright and Johnny O'Neal.
Louis Heriveaux is one of the most in-demand jazz pianists in the Atlanta area. He has toured and performed with guitarist Russell Malone, vocalist Nnenna Freelon, saxophonist Jimmy Heath, vocalist Jeanie Bryson and many others. A music producer in the popular music world, Heriveaux has worked with the likes of Dallas Austin, 112, TLC, Ginuwine and Snoop Dogg.
