Brookwood Park is one of the first things visitors see as they leave I-75 and travel down Walnut Avenue to downtown Dalton. City officials say some tweaks they are making to the park will help it make an even better impression on both visitors and city residents.
Crews are currently installing a new picnic shelter and new playground equipment for children as well as linking the sidewalks that surround the park to make it more convenient for walkers.
Recreation department Director Ronnie Nix says the work is expected to cost around $100,000 and will come out of that department’s operating budget. He says the work should be finished by around July 1.
Brookwood resident Tommy Brooks uses the park quite a bit, and he said he believes the changes will have a good impact.
“I see a lot of people walking here, and this will probably help them. We might see more kids out here, too,” he said.
Dalton City Councilman Gary Crews, who is a Brookwood resident, said Brookwood is already a well used park and the additions to the walking area in particular could really boost use of the park.
“I think you can see what will happen by looking at Civitan Park. Having a larger walking route will encourage more people to walk in the park,” he said.
City crews are also working on a 1.8-acre site a little bit west of Walnut Avenue next to Garcia’s Restaurant. The Barrett family donated the land to the city two years ago, and city officials said then that they plan to use it for a greenspace area and pocket park.
“All we’re doing right now is trying to clear out some of the underbrush so we can see how the land lays,” said public works Director Benny Dunn.
