Two people have been charged with vehicular homicide and DUI after a car that an eighth-grade North Whitfield Middle School student was riding in flipped, then was hit by another car.
Adrian Martinez, 13, was riding in the back seat of a Chevy Cobalt on Sunday on Dogwood Valley Road in Catoosa County three miles west of Tunnel Hill when the driver lost control and overturned the car, said Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright. Martinez was not wearing a seat belt.
“The vehicle in which he was traveling was then hit by another vehicle,” Wright said.
Wright said the wreck occurred at about 1:35 a.m. Martinez was riding in a vehicle driven by Dean T. Butt, 23, of Crandall. Butt was charged with first degree vehicular homicide, DUI (pending a blood test), endangering a child under 14 while DUI, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and speeding.
Wright said Rene Preciado, 25, of Chatsworth, hit the Cobalt with his Nissan Altima. He has been charged with first degree vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving and speeding.
Both drivers were injured, and a front-seat passenger riding in the Cobalt was also injured. All three were treated at a local hospital, Wright said, and Butt and Preciado remained in the Catoosa County jail Monday evening.
Mass of Christian Burial for Martinez will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 6 to 9 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Thursday until the hour of the service.
