A Dalton Police officer who was dragged by a car and injured while trying to question the driver — suspected of DUI — in mid-September is back at work, Public Service Commission members learned on Tuesday.
Officer Steven Collins was an outpatient due to the injury, and is recovering and performing light duty back at the Police Services Center, Assistant Police Chief Truman Whitfield said.
The suspect was arrested days later for DUI, battery, assault and traffic charges, as well as identity fraud. Investigators also discovered he has outstanding charges in Florida, added Whitfield.
Six new alcohol licenses were approved and almost 100 licenses were renewed with or without changes at Tuesday’s meeting of the commission.
New licenses approved included The Castaway Club at 618 S. Hamilton St. for pouring beer, wine and liquor; El Dos de Oro Bar at 425 N. Hamilton St. for pouring beer; El Tenampa Bar at 700 Redwine St., Suites 3 and 4, for pouring beer; Garcia’s Grill at 1205 W. Walnut Ave. for pouring beer, wine and liquor; Hamilton’s at 243 N. Hamilton St., Suite 5, for pouring beer, wine and liquor; and Taqueria el Braspero y Fruteria at 1101 E. Morris St., Suite A, for pouring beer.
Chairman Bill Weaver told each applicant in attendance that underage drinking at their establishments “will not be tolerated” in the city.
Eight renewals with license changes were approved for 2012, and 91 renewals were approved without changes for next year.
Dalton Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield said the Georgia Smoke Diver class will be hosted by the department Nov. 5-11 and will have an economic impact on the area, although he did not provide a monetary estimate.
