Dalton council plans to cut tax rate

DALTON — The Dalton City Council is slated to cut its property tax rate to 2.87 mills from 2.974 mills when members meet on Tuesday.

City officials project the new tax rate will bring in $9.647 million, compared to $10.603 million last year.

Mayor David Pennington told The Daily Citizen recently that now is not the right time to raise taxes as the economy isn’t expected to rebound for at least a few more years.

Pennington was one of several people who asked the members of the Dalton Board of Education to reconsider their plans to raise their property tax rate to 8.134 mills from 7.845 mills. That move is expected to raise another $1 million from city taxpayers.

City Council members are also expected to vote on an $18,000 contract with the Savannah College of Art and Design to create an interdisciplinary course that will allow students in the college’s urban design, historic preservation, design management and advertising departments to work with the city to attract young creative professionals to develop the city’s brand.

And the council will vote on an agreement with the Dalton Housing Authority to buy some uninhabited units just east of the Dalton Community Center for $10. Dalton City Administrator Ty Ross said the city plans to tear down those units and add that property to the park land around the community center.

The council will also vote on contracts totaling about $10,000 with Geo-Hydro Engineers to conduct environmental assessments and hazardous materials inspections of the property before the deal is closed.
