Tunnel Hill fire sends one to hospital

A Tunnel Hill man is at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga after being caught in a residential fire authorities believe may have been of his own doing.

Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Swiney said officials are still investigating the fire that occurred on East School Street at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“We think it’s very possible it might be a self-inflicted suicide attempt,” Swiney said.

The man was about 50 years old, Swiney said, and no one else was at the home at the time of the fire. He said investigators believe he used some kind of accelerant, such as gasoline or kerosene.

Whitfield County Fire Chief Carl Collins said the man was flown to Erlanger for treatment.  He referred questions about the investigation to the sheriff’s office.

The man’s condition wasn’t immediately known.
