3 musical premieres to be in Dalton Tuesday

Tuesday evening’s Concert on Campus by trumpeter Adam Hayes will feature three world premiere performances.

Hayes — accompanied by percussionist John David and pianist Kris Carlisle — will perform “Sonatina,” a 2012 composition by He Jian-Jun; “Star and Shadow,” a 2010 piece by Lawrence Kramer; and “Las Apariencias Engañan,” a 2012 composition by Robert J. Bradshaw.

The free recital will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall.

According to Ellie Jenkins, assistant professor of music and coordinator of the concert series, Hayes is an internationally recognized performer who has particular interest in performing new music, and “endeavors to promote the latest in solo trumpet repertoire.”

Hayes has performed with more than 40 professional orchestras throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia. He is currently artist-in-residence and assistant professor of music at Berry College in Rome. His concert in Dalton is sponsored in part by Eastman Trumpets.

David is from Atlanta and is an accomplished studio drummer who has played on many commercial recordings, Jenkins said. David has performed with Arturo Sandoval, Bruce Hornsby and the Jaco Pastorius Big Band, among others, and has twice received international awards from Downbeat Magazine.

David teaches percussion and jazz at Berry College and North Georgia College and State University.

Carlisle returns to Dalton State as pianist for the recital. Carlisle specializes in contemporary music and collaborated with Hayes on the recently released album “Current,” a collection of contemporary works for piano and trumpet. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Martha Fischer-Tye Foundation Award, a Special Achievement in Musicology Award from the Kennedy Center, and a Georgia Music Teachers Steinway Piano Galleries Educator Grant.

His recording project “The American Evolution” explores the ways in which contemporary American composers have used traditional compositional genres while incorporating contemporary musical language.

Seating in Goodroe Auditorium is first-come, first-served. For more information, call Jenkins at (706) 272-2528.
