Candidate profiles: McCurdy: ‘A new vision for the county’

Even though Republican Kay Leonard McCurdy faces a six-term incumbent in the Nov. 6 election for tax commissioner of Murray County, McCurdy says she has “the same experience.”

“Just because she (Democrat Charlotte Keener) has been working in the tax office that long does not make me a lesser candidate,” said McCurdy. “I’m right there with the rest of them. I have experience in collections, accounts receivable, accounts payable, computers and web design. I want to bring the office into the 21st century.”

McCurdy said she will make the tax office more transparent and accessible.

“I want you to be able to find the answers to your tax questions without coming into the office,” said McCurdy. “If you don’t care for the Internet, you can still come into the office like normal. These would not be two separate entities. It would all be run by me and the staff in-house.”

A “strong web presence” will help taxpayers, said McCurdy, who promises to fund new technology by cutting $23,000 off the current commissioner’s salary.

“People have asked me how I would do that with a tight budget,” said McCurdy. “I’ve already found money. If the voters put their trust in me — because I have a new vision for the county — my salary will be less and it will bring in new equipment.”

Office hours are another area that McCurdy wants to improve.

“People can’t always get to the office before 4:30 p.m. when it closes,” said McCurdy. “So we will stagger the hours out to around 7 p.m. one night a week — probably on a Thursday — without adding overtime. I’m paid by salary, but I’ll have one (hourly) position come in the afternoon and stay with me in the evening. It’ll be more than just a drop box.”

The citizens come first, said McCurdy, because their taxpayer dollars keep the office running.

“Every person that walks through our door will be waited on right away with respect and dignity,” said McCurdy. “They are my boss.”

McCurdy graduated from Murray County High School in 1977 and received a certificate in computer applications from Dalton State College in 1995.

She said she has “deep roots in this county” and is a sixth generation county resident. She has been married to Don for 31 years. They have two grown children, Krissi and Matt.
