A Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a man who tried to run the officer over with his pickup truck Wednesday night in the Dawnville community, officials said.
The man was taken to Erlanger Medical Center. His condition was not released as of late Wednesday night.
Capt. Rick Swiney said deputies responded to a 911 call that came in at about 7:30 p.m. about a man assaulting a female and damaging a residence on Mitchell Bridge Road.
The names of the people involved were not released.
Swiney said that before an officer could arrive, the suspect left in a pickup truck and went to another residence on Mitchell Bridge Road. Officers located him there and ordered him out of the vehicle, but he wouldn’t comply, Swiney said. The suspect instead started driving toward one of the officers.
“He attempted to run over the officer in the yard,” Swiney said. “The officer retreated as far as he could, at which point the suspect was almost to the officer, and the officer fired, striking the suspect.”
Swiney said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in as is protocol in officer-involved shootings. The name of the officer wasn’t released Wednesday, but he was not injured, Swiney said. Another officer sustained a slight arm injury in the incident and was taken to a hospital for examination, he said.
Swiney said no other suspects were involved. The condition of the female the suspect allegedly assaulted wasn’t immediately known.
