Primary ballots quiz voters on issues

The Daily Citizen received 12 awards, including third place for general excellence in its division, in the Georgia Press Association 2012 Better Newspaper Contest.

This follows a strong showing in the state Associated Press awards for writing and photography in 2011 in which the newspaper won 21 awards, including the division’s “Story of the Year.”

The winners were announced Saturday during the group’s 126th annual convention in Miramar Beach, Fla., and the inaugural Southeastern Press Convention alongside press associations from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The Daily Citizen won the following awards:

• General excellence: Third place

• Sports section or pages: Second place, staff.

• Editorial writing: Third place, staff.

• Education coverage: First place, Rachel Brown.

• Investigative reporting: First place, Rachel Brown, for her story on a proposed fine arts center in Dalton.

• Religion coverage: First place, Rachel Brown.

• Feature writing: Second place, Mark Millican, for his story about a war veteran’s return trip to Italy.

• Hard news writing: First place, Mark Millican, for his story on an airman’s remains being returned home.

• Hard news writing: Second place, Mark Millican, for his story about inmates filing a $5 million lawsuit against the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

• Feature photograph: First place, Matt Hamilton, for his photo of a pie eating contest.

• Feature photograph: Second place, Matt Hamilton, for his photo of a child at a skate park.

• News photograph: Third place, Matt Hamilton, for his photo of a Ringgold soldier.

In the general excellence category, the Savannah Morning News, The Times of Gainesville, the Rome News-Tribune and the Statesboro Herald each earned top honors in the four largest daily newspaper divisions.

Photo of the year honors went to Jon-Michael Sullivan of the Marietta Daily Journal.

Newspapers were judged in nine divisions based on circulation. There were 717 awards presented in 36 categories to 85 newspapers.
