Advance voting for Tuesday’s general election ends today.
Advance voting takes place in Whitfield County at the elections office in the courthouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It takes place in Murray County in the elections office in the courthouse annex from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Voters need to bring one of the six accepted forms of photo identification. They are: a valid state or federal government-issued photo ID; a Georgia driver’s license, even if it’s expired; a valid employee photo ID from any local, state or federal government; a valid U.S. passport; a valid U.S. military photo ID; or a valid tribal photo ID.
The presidential race is on the top of the ticket, and voters must choose from among Libertarian Gary Johnson (former governor of New Mexico), Democratic incumbent Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney (former governor of Massachusetts).
Georgia voters will also decide whether to change the state constitution to allow the state to create charter schools. Local school boards already have the authority to create charter schools.
Voters in Whitfield and Murray counties, along with the rest of Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, will decide between Republican incumbent Tom Graves and Democrat Danny Grant.
Each county will also vote on a contested sheriff’s race. In Whitfield County, Democratic incumbent Scott Chitwood faces Republican former sheriff Jim Stafford. In Murray County, Democratic incumbent Howard Ensley faces Republican Gary Langford, a retired law enforcement officer who spent most of his career with the Georgia State Patrol.
There are also several other contested races in Whitfield and Murray counties.

‘It was a brutal time’

Dr. William Blackman opened a box of tools consisting of medical instruments, including a saw, and proceeded to tell visitors how they were used more than a century ago to amputate limbs for soldiers wounded on the battlefield.
