The Downtown Dalton Development Authority (DDDA) will kick off the Holiday Open House with a reception Thursday night from 5:30 to 7 at the historic Freight Depot, 305 S. Depot St. in Dalton. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
The reception will begin with a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the “Nutcracker” ballet with a special performance from the Dalton Arts Project.
The reception will conclude with the unveiling of the holiday window display at the Dalton Freight Depot featuring “Peacocks on Parade.” “Peacocks on Parade” is the first ever large-scale public art program in the downtown Dalton area. The program, initiated by the DDDA in 2011, features 5 feet by 5 feet fiberglass peacocks that will be displayed in permanent locations around downtown Dalton.
The peacocks have been adopted by the Civitan Club of Dalton, Dalton Arts Project and Toys in the Attic, Carpet Capital Association of Realtors, Laughter & Jones Financial Management, Affordable Sales of Dalton, the Sweet Spot and Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful. Thursday will be an opportunity for the public to get a sneak peek at the peacocks before they are placed on the streets in their permanent locations.
The Downtown Holiday Open House will take place Thursday through Sunday with extended shopping hours and annual discounts at downtown merchants. The 53rd annual Kiwanis Pancake Day will be in Dalton Green Park from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday. A holiday celebration will also take place on Saturday at the Dalton Freight Depot and will feature free horse and carriage rides from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., downtown dollars drawings from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., pictures with Santa from 3 to 5 p.m. and refreshments.
