Betty Pippin is fashion show honoree

The Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center Board of Directors has selected Betty Pippin to be recognized at the center’s fashion show which is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, at Walnut Hill Farm. This event is open to the public to help support the center’s important mission of addressing the issue of domestic violence and to honor Pippin for her dedication to the center and its mission.

Pippin is a longstanding member of Dalton’s business community and an exemplary volunteer, supporting many charitable efforts such as the Cherokee Estate for Girls and Georgia Highlands for mental health, and she helped educate the students of Dalton State College on depression. She has also chaired community service projects with the Business and Professional Women’s Club, setting up nursing home visitations and providing two annual scholarships for deserving young females.

Pippin has contributed her time, talents and energies to many causes over the years, but the Crisis Center has always held a special place in her heart. Her attitude has always been “How can I help?”

Over the years she has made an impact on the lives of many women and children through her direct involvement in the Family Crisis Center. She has made many contributions to the center including painting walls and getting floorcovering installed to ensure the opening of the first emergency shelter.

Contacted by board member Donna Finch about the honor, Pippin quickly noted the work had been shared by all the members of the Dalton Business and Professional Women. Finch commented, “This truly shows Betty’s nature, willing to roll up her sleeves and work, but being reluctant to take any of the credit.”

Pippin’s father moved the family from Ellijay to Dalton for employment in the thriving carpet industry. The move occurred during her freshman year in high school. While she recalls this being a difficult time to move away from friends, the transition to a new high school and community taught her life skills that have served her well in her adult years.

After graduating from North Whitfield High School, Pippin had a 20-year career in banking at First National Bank of Dalton. She attended Dalton State College (known as Dalton Junior College at the time) to complete many business courses with the support and encouragement of her employer. She commented that while she loved the banking industry, she felt that a growth opportunity for her was to start her own business.

In 1982, with her attitude of determination, she founded New York Life Group Sales and Service. In 1990 her son Allan joined the firm and in 1995 Pippin Insurance Agency Inc. was formed. In 2004 her son-in-law, Sandy Howard, came on board as a brokering agent.

Pippin has received many industry awards and designations, among them her LUTCF designation, Agent of the Year, and the Million Dollar Producer Award. In 2004 she was presented with the much coveted Henry W. Sutton Award for community service and dedication to the insurance industry by the Georgia Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. Today, Pippin is semi-retired, but stays involved in the business and maintains her insurance license.

She is also a mother and grandmother. Her son Allan is married to the former Tammy Thomas. Her daughter Tammy is married to Sandy Howard. She is the proud grandmother of Sarah and Samuel Pippin. Her semi-retired status affords her the opportunity to pursue her many community interests as well as her hobbies. She is an active member of the Evangelical Methodist Church, a member of the League of Women Voters, president of the Dalton Business and Professional Women and a member of the Rosie’s Recycled Teenager’s Red Hat Society.

Her hobbies include traveling, fishing and reading. In addition to the Crisis Center, she has supported many other charitable endeavors, including the United Way and the American Cancer Society.

Pippin will be the honoree at the center’s fashion show slated for Saturday, June 11, starting at 11:30 a.m. The venue is Walnut Hill Farm on Lee Bryant Road, off Highway 2 East of Prater’s Mill. Owner Nanette Yarbrough generously donated the facility for the event.

Spring fashions will be provided by stores in both the Dalton and Calhoun communities as well as other surrounding areas. Board member Jennifer Dixon and the Mary Kay Cosmetic team will provide makeup fashion trends.

The purpose of the center is to end violence in the home by providing shelter, advocacy and support to victims while working in communities to change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors.  The center provides emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their children, as well as advocacy and client support services through offices in Dalton and Calhoun. The center serves Gordon, Murray and Whitfield County residents. The center hot line is (706) 278-5586.

The board of the center encourages the community to make plans to attend this fun event in order to help support the center’s mission to “keep families safe” in our community and to honor Pippin and her contributions. Tickets are $50 per person and include the luncheon, door prizes and the fashion show. Groups may purchase a table of eight for $350. Tickets are available by contacting the center at (706) 278-6595.
