The Boy Scouts of America Northwest Georgia Council honored Dr. Don Thomas as its 2013 Distinguished Citizen on Wednesday at the group’s fourth annual Dalton/Whitfield Patron Lunch.
The luncheon is primarily a fundraising event for the local Boy Scout council, but has also proven to be an effective way to honor outstanding local community leaders as well. Past Whitfield County recipients include Charlie Bowen, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Griggs and Jim Jolly.
Bill Bowen, lunch chairman, was the master of ceremonies for the event, which included a flag presentation and invocation by Whitfield County scouts, a local scouting update given by Barnett Chitwood, volunteer recognition and the award presentation.
Mayor David Pennington presented Thomas with the award, and also presented him with a mayoral proclamation declaring March 20, 2013, “Volunteer and Scouting Appreciation Day in honor of Dr. Don Thomas.”
Dr. Sherwood Jones and Nancy Kennedy were keynote speakers, praising Thomas’ lifetime of service to the Dalton/Whitfield community.
