Man found guilty in ‘traveler’ case

Undergoing pre-sentence investigation

DALTON — A Canton man was found guilty by a Whitfield County Superior Court jury on Wednesday for criminal attempt to commit aggravated child molestation and criminal attempt to commit child molestation — both stemming from his traveling to Dalton to have sex with a minor — a court officer said.

Lenwyn Ramkellawan, 51, of 503 Woodbrook Lane, is scheduled to be sentenced on May 29 by Judge William Boyett, who ordered a pre-sentence investigation.

“Ramkellawan, a Canadian citizen, traveled to Dalton on July 21, 2010, to meet with two individuals he believed to be a stepfather and a 14-year-old stepdaughter for the purpose of engaging in sexual intercourse and other sex acts with the stepdaughter,” said District Attorney Bert Poston.

Ramkellawan had actually been communicating with members of the Northwest Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a team of law enforcement officers from several northwest Georgia agencies and the FBI, Poston said.

Ramkellawan was taken into custody pending sentencing. He was represented by Donald Samual and Amanda Clark-Palmer of Atlanta and Sam Little of Dalton.

“The defense team called two witnesses — an expert in Internet psychology who testified about role playing and other behaviors on the Internet, and a computer forensic expert who testified that the laptop computer seized at the time of Ramkellawan’s arrest did not contain any child pornography,” Poston said.

Little did not immediately return a phone call Thursday afternoon.

Poston and Assistant District Attorney Mark Higgins presented the state’s case. The trial began on Monday and ended around noon on Wednesday, with the jury deliberating for about two hours before reaching a verdict.

Detective David Scroggins of the Rossville Police Department and Detective Tim Deal and Lt. Chris Lyons of the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation and testified for the state. Officers from the Dalton Police Department and Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office who are also members of the task force participated in the arrest, Poston added.
