A new cultural fad — combining a road race with something like a gentler version of a paintball event — is coming to Dalton in a few days.
Event organizer Scenic City Multisport is putting on what president Denny Marshall said is the first color run to come to the North Georgia area for a road race on Saturday, March 9, at 1104 Redwine Cove Road S.W. Proceeds from the event will go to Komen Chattanooga, the local unit of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The event will be an un-timed run in which participants wear white T-shirts and are sprayed by volunteers and organizers with non-toxic, edible color as part of the race. Some color runs offer runners a variety of colors, but this one, dubbed “Wash Me Pink,” is all about the banner color for breast cancer awareness.
“The weird thing about color runs is it’s not really a race,” Marshall said. “Instead of a hard-core race with serious runners, it’s more of a family get-together.”
Komen Chattanooga mission director Anita Stewart said 75 cents of every dollar goes back to the local mission for screenings, educational efforts and grants to various organizations involved with the treatment and early detection of breast cancer. The other 25 percent goes to the national organization for medical research and advancements, she said. The group hopes to raise $30,000 with the event.
Komen Chattanooga covers Whitfield, Murray, Dade, Walker, Catoosa and Fannin counties in Georgia and Grundy, Marion, Sequatchie, Bledsoe, Rhea, Meigs, McMinn, Polk, Bradley and Hamilton counties in Tennessee.
“We’re very excited about this race,” Stewart said. “I think this is gong to be the first color run that’s been introduced in the North Georgia area. We’re really excited that we’re bringing that to Dalton.”
