Dalton-Whitfield Habitat for Humanity is now taking applications for new homes through Thursday at 5 p.m. Applications can be picked up and returned to the Dalton-Whitfield Community Development Corp. office during regular office hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
That office is at 205 W. Gordon St. in Dalton and the phone number is (706) 876-1630.
Habitat seeks to provide homes for low-income families who need adequate shelter, have the ability to pay for the Habitat home and are willing to partner with Habitat to build their home and/or other Habitat homes.
Completed applications will be screened to see if all the selection criteria are met. This includes participating in a free home buyer seminar and a one-on-one housing counseling session available through the Dalton-Whitfield Community Development Corp.; meeting certain income guidelines; and passing a criminal background check as well as a current credit report. Those applicants who meet the basic criteria will be processed further and an in-home visit will be scheduled.
Habitat for Humanity International seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.
The Dalton-Whitfield chapter of Habitat for Humanity was started in 1987 and its volunteers and partner families have built or refurbished 49 family homes to date.
The organization usually builds one or two houses per year and the application and family selection process may take up to six months. It may be one to two years before a selected family actually moves into its new home.
