Council selects firm for community center construction

DALTON — The Dalton City Council voted 3-0 Monday night to accept a $4.383 million proposal from Headley Construction of Newnan to build the new Dalton Community Center.

Mayor David Pennington votes only in the event of a tie.

Eleven firms turned in proposals for the project, including one that made a lower bid than Headley, but architect Kenneth Harless said he and a panel of city employees who reviewed the proposals recommended Headley because of its experience with similar projects and because it was more likely to use local subcontractors.

“We are still in the process of acquiring some more land out there, which will affect things somewhat,” said Pennington. “But they should start building out there pretty soon.”

The previous community center, which opened in 1966 on Fredrick Street, was demolished in September.

The new building will have two full-size basketball courts, compared to one middle school-size gym in the previous building, as well as an indoor walking track, a weight room and a large meeting room that can be divided into smaller rooms if needed.

In addition to the traditional recreation activities, the center will host an office of the federal Women, Infants and Children program, and city officials have said they would like to have a satellite branch of the Dalton-Whitfield Library there as well as programs from the Creative Arts Guild, Dalton State College and local churches and community groups.
