RESACA —
One person was killed and three injured after a shooting incident that started late Thursday afternoon in Resaca at a residence near U.S. 41 and Craigtown Road.
Gordon County Sheriff's deputies arrested Paul Buchannon late Thursday night after a four-hour manhunt, finding the suspect hiding near Hill City Baptist Church in northern Gordon County.
Buchannon was shot by law enforcement officers after he threatened them with a gun at the end of the manhunt.
He is accused of fatally shooting Christy Ann McKnight, 40.
Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston said Friday afternoon that no further medical updates are available on the two teenage gunshot victims that Buchannon allegedly shot before killing McKnight.
McKnight’s son, Dustin Lee Henderson, 17, and her nephew, Cody Shawn Adams, 19, were transported to local hospitals, one with a gunshot wound in the back, and one with a shot to his leg.
The shootings, according to the sheriff, “stemmed from a domestic violence situation.”
Buchannon had previously been arrested for domestic violence, Ralston said, but it was unclear whether domestic violence had factored into his interactions with McKnight in the past.
Gordon County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Robert Paris said Friday that Buchannon was still in the intensive care unit at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.
Ralston said the incident began around 6 p.m. Thursday when deputies were called to 2511 U.S. Highway 41 in Resaca. There they found two males, ages 19 and 17 shot, one in the back, the other in the leg, Ralston said. They were transported to the hospital.
Ralston said that witnesses told detectives that a woman was taken by force and placed into a black Chevrolet Camaro by the gunman who took off going north on Highway 41.
Searchers found Buchannon’s Camaro next to a railroad track in the Hill City community near the Whitfield County line by tracking the missing woman’s cell phone signal. When they found the vehicle it was not occupied and authorities began searching the area.
The woman’s body was soon found on the railroad track several hundred yards north of Hill City. She was dead from an apparent gunshot wound to her head.
Gordon County officials asked for help from the Department of Corrections, Whitfield County and the Georgia Aviation Authority, which brought in a helicopter to assist with the search.
A Department of Corrections search team with a bloodhound found Buchannon hiding in a wooded area near the Hill City crossroads at 9:50 p.m.
Officers shot Buchannon after he threatened them with a gun.
No officers were injured. The identities of the officers involved in the shooting are being withheld.
Buchannon, 38, who was living in the Royal Inn on Ga. Highway 53 in Calhoun, faces charges of murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and firearms violations.
