Murray County, Gladden, North Murray and Bagley students represented their county well in Covington recently at the Georgia FFA’s Summer Leadership Camp.
Advisers Mike Bushey, Sarah Duckworth, David Bushey and Paul Little took more than 65 students to this event. Once there, the boys and girls formed gender-specific teams and competed against hundreds of FFA members from across the state for the highly coveted “Team of the Week” title. To achieve this status, teams competed in several team and individual events including softball, volleyball, swimming and diving events, ping pong, tennis, horse shoes, football throw, basketball, fishing tournament, and running and craft events. The teams also participated in an obstacle course that involved team-building, physical tasks and mud elements.
Teams earn points for every event in which they place first through third. The team with the most points at the end of the week is named Team of the Week. Even adviser challenges earn each team points.
The boys team had the fastest obstacle course time and was named Team of the Week runner- up, while the girls won the obstacle course event and were named Team of the Week.
Summer Leadership Camp is a five-week event that draws more than 2,000 FFA members and their advisers to Covington to take part in a leadership experience like no other.
What's Student Leadership Camp?
• It’s a week-long camp just for FFA and FCCLA students.
• Students come from all over Georgia.
• FFA and FCCLA advisers bring the students. The Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center provides the lodging, meals, recreation and programs.
• Programs are run by a college summer staff, mostly former campers.
• It’s a chance to learn real leadership and teamwork outside the classroom.
