Yvonne King says she’s grateful she had not left for work when her house trailer in Crandall caught fire Wednesday morning.
“I was actually getting ready to go to work (about 6 a.m.) and leave the kids in bed asleep, and the power started flickering,” she said.
King said she remembered she had left the dryer running and decided to turn it off. When she got to the back of the trailer, she saw flames coming from the fuse box in her closet. King said she quickly got her children, ages 13 and 18, to safety, then discharged two fire extinguishers onto the flames. Her husband had already left for work. The house trailer is at 1478 Jim Petty Road.
The Murray County Fire Department was able to put out the fire and keep the blaze confined to a bedroom and bathroom. However, the trailer isn’t livable and was damaged by smoke and the process of putting out the fire.
Fire chief Dwayne Bain said two stations responded, and he determined the fire had started by a short in the electrical panel. He said the fact King closed the door to the room helped contain the fire.
“It was an old trailer, but it was home and paid for,” King said. “If the fire had probably been 30 minutes later, I would have been gone, and the kids would have been sleeping.”
The family is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
