You’ve probably sat down from time to time, looking through old photographs. You can go back and look at your children as they grew up or remember old friends or relatives who have passed on. But what if you didn’t have any photographs to remember those times?
Dalton photographer Ty Miller says many people don’t have those sort of photos, so he and fellow photographer Mike Houston, with help from the United Way of Northwest Georgia, Saturday brought together local photographers and makeup artists to help provide free, professional-quality portrait photographs for people who would not be able to get them.
“Pictures capture a moment of time and can last for generations. It would be a shame for people not to have pictures of themselves as kids,” he said. “But a lot of people don’t have pictures of themselves, and we thought we could offer this opportunity to the community.”
Miller said the project was inspired by the Web site www.help-portrait.com, which encourages photographers around the world to help out on Saturday.
Maria Aguilar says she heard about the project when her children brought home an announcement from the Boys and Girls Club, so she brought her family for a portrait.
“It was nice of them to do this. I was really happy with the way it turned out,” she said.
After the photographs were taken, each family or person would look at all the pictures that were taken and they could choose to have either one 8 by 10-inch or two 5 by 7-inch prints and two 4 by 6-inch prints made on the spot. In addition, a disk with all of the photographs will be mailed to them later.
Several local photographers pitched in, as did Sally Adams, a makeup artist from Chatsworth.
“I usually do theater make up, but I heard about this (Friday) and decided to bring my kit and help out,” she said. “It’s nice to be able to give back. It’s especially great to help middle and high school age girls who may not know exactly how to put on their makeup, and I put it on and explain how to do it and teach them the process.”
