The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated 19 counties in Georgia, including Whitfield and Murray, as primary natural disaster areas due to losses caused by severe storms and flooding that occurred beginning Sept. 18.
“This action will provide help to hundreds of farmers who suffered significant production losses to corn, cotton, soybeans and forage, as well as vegetable and fruit crops,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a press release.
Farm operators are eligible for low interest emergency loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met. Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the declaration (Dec. 4) to apply for loans to help cover part of their losses. FSA will consider the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability. FSA has a variety of programs to help eligible farmers recover from adversity.
Interested farmers may contact their local USDA Service Centers for more information on eligibility requirements and application procedures. The center serving Whitfield and Murray counties is the Gordon County Farm Service Agency, 717 S. Wall St., Suite 1, in Calhoun. The phone number is (706) 629-2582. More information is also available online at http://disaster.fsa.usda.gov.
