Richardson resignation: Smooth transition expected

Charles Oliver

Local lawmakers said they were sad to see state House Speaker Glenn Richardson resign after a suicide attempt and allegations of an affair with a lobbyist. But they said the resignation should have little impact on the House of Representatives during the next session.

“I have worked with Speaker Richardson for five years. I have always found him to be honorable in his dealings with me. My thoughts and prayers will be with him,” said Rep. Tom Dickson, R-Cohutta. “At this point, we’ll just be looking forward to getting the session started and doing the business of the state.”

Richardson announced his resignation as speaker and as a member of the House on Thursday, effective Jan. 1, 2010.

“It’s a sad day,” said Rep. Roger Williams, R-Dalton, “It’s never good when anything like this happens. He has been a good speaker. But it’s probably better for everyone involved for him to resign and let the speaker pro tem take over. The transition should be a smooth one.”
