• First Presbyterian Church in Dalton will hold its annual Kirkin O’ the Tartan service Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The event will include special music by the Chattanooga Bagpipe and Drum Band. If you have an article of clothing with your clan tartan, you are encouraged to wear it.

“Kirk” is the Scottish synonym for the English word “church.” The Kirkin O’ the Tartan was brought to the U.S. in the 1940s by the late Rev. Peter Marshall. The service celebrates Scottish-American heritage and features bagpipe music and the blessing of clan or family tartans.

Scottish bagpipes and tartans were banned in 1746 by an act of the British Parliament — the Act of Proscription. The intent of the act was to assimilate Scottish Highlanders and their customs, but it had little effect. Scottish Presbyterians known as covenanters began to hold secret outdoor worship services where clans and their tartans were blessed.

Today’s Kirkins typically include blessings for clans, a display of family tartans and a call to remember our Christian heritage.
