Woman trying to sell drugs called code enforcement officer
A woman who was attempting to sell illegal drugs by phone and mistakenly called a Murray County code enforcement officer pleaded guilty in Superior Court.
Devan Melissa Martin, 30, of 2644 Halls Chapel Road in Chatsworth, was charged in March with the use of a communications facility to sell a controlled substance, which assistant district attorney Scott Minter said referred to the use of the phone. Judge Cindy Morris gave Martin four years on probation after the plea.
“She dialed the wrong number and the code enforcement officer was mistaken for someone else,” Minter said. “She asked him if he wanted to buy some ‘hydros,’ which is the slang name for hydrocodone. He asked her, ‘What did you say?’ and hit the record button on his cell phone before she repeated it. He then told her who he was and contacted the sheriff’s office. They took out a warrant on her.”
Public defender Steve Blevins represented Martin. He said the charge was her first felony. She was charged in 2002 for writing a bad check, which was paid in full, according to a Magistrate Court spokeswoman. In 2005, Martin was charged with violating the mandatory education for children law, which was dismissed, Minter said.
“The maximum for that (phone misuse) charge is four years imprisonment,” said Blevins, who noted Martin was sentenced under first offender status on the felony.
“She was sorry for what happened,” he said.
