DALTON —
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations surrounding the resignation of Murray County Chief Magistrate Bryant Cochran.
District Attorney Bert Poston said he asked GBI officials to conduct a criminal investigation into whether Cochran pre-signed warrants. Poston said he also asked the agency to investigate the circumstances of an incident leading to a woman who said Cochran sexually propositioned being arrested by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office.
Angela Garmley, who was charged with possession of methamphetamine earlier this week, prompted a Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission inquiry into whether Cochran inappropriately solicited her. She has denied the meth found in a magnetized metal can under her car belonged to her.
Cochran said the sole reason for his resignation Wednesday at 5 p.m. was the pre-signed warrants. Cochran’s attorney, Chris Townley, was not in the office on Friday but told the Associated Press when the allegations surfaced that if the public defender’s office thinks the warrants were illegal, they will be “greatly disappointed.”
Jerry Scott, a special agent in charge for the GBI, declined to provide details and said he could not give a timeline on when the investigation would be complete.
“We’ve met this morning with District Attorney Poston, and we are going to be conducting an investigation into portions of the circumstances involved in his resignation from the Murray County magistrate’s office,” he said.
Poston said the JQC handled the inquiry into the sexual allegations.
“Based on my meetings with the JQC investigator, it does not appear that the allegations of a sexual nature require any additional criminal investigation, and I have not asked the GBI to investigate those matters,” Poston said. “I am not aware of any potential criminal charges arising out of those allegations.”
Poston said the JQC would share its findings with GBI investigators.
