Whitfield County website has new video explaining property tax

A new video on the Whitfield County website helps taxpayers understand how their property taxes are calculated and where their tax dollars go.

You can see the 12-minute video by going to www.whitfieldcountyga.com and clicking on “Facts About Property Tax” under the “More Information” tag near the top of the home page.

“We hope our residents will take a few minutes to watch this video and get a clearer understanding of how their local government officials take seriously our responsibilities to provide and fund the many services that improve the quality of life here,” Whitfield County Commission Chairman Mike Babb said.

The video points out that statewide, the average property tax bill is $1,500 a year. To pay for road maintenance in the county, for example, the average property owner pays about the total of two oil changes for their car; for their contribution to the operation of the library, less than the cost of one hardbound book; for the county health center, the price of a bottle of cough syrup; and for courts and jail for a year, the cost of three months of a private security system at their home.

The list of services provided by the 159 counties in Georgia goes on and on.

“Not every citizen in every county will use all the services, but all of them — like our courts and jails, or recreation facilities and infrastructure development — help shape the identity of our communities and help create a sense of place that lets us know this is where we belong,” the video says.

“So the next time you pay your property taxes, think about all the benefits they provide,” the video concludes. “They’re an investment you make in your home, your neighborhood, your community and they are an investment that pays off day after day, year after year, by protecting the things that are most important to you — your home, your family and your quality of life.”

The video, “Property Taxes: An Investment In Your Community,” was produced by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia.

“This is a valuable resource that the association is providing to all counties as it explains everything you and your citizens need to know about Georgia’s property tax system,” a spokesman for ACCG said.
