A Dalton man authorities said sold a pound of methamphetamine to an undercover buyer and fought officers as they tried to arrest him was sentenced Thursday to almost 12 years in prison.
Jeffrey McGuire, 40, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Harold L. Murphy on the meth charge, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He pleaded guilty in October 2012. Murphy sentenced McGuire to 11 years, six months in prison plus four years on probation.
“Methamphetamine has had a devastating impact on communities in North Georgia,” U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said. “This defendant was caught trying to sell a pound of very pure methamphetamine. Today’s prison sentence will prevent this meth dealer from further contributing to the deterioration of our community.”
Officials said a “police cooperator” arranged for McGuire to sell the meth to him for $17,000 and for the exchange to take place at a Kangaroo gas station in Dalton. McGuire brought the drugs, the release states, and the cooperator signaled police who moved in to arrest him.
“However, McGuire vigorously resisted arrest,” the release states. “It took police several minutes to subdue and restrain him.”
McGuire was injured during the arrest and taken to the hospital where he tried to escape again, twice striking a nurse and once trying to grab a firearm belonging to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was guarding him, according to the release.
