Anderson appointed to regional planning commission
ATLANTA — The office of Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle said Brian Anderson has been appointed to serve on the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission serving the Dalton area effective July 1. The council will serve as the primary strategic entity for land use, environmental, transportation and historic preservation planning in its designated region.
“As a veteran of the U.S. Army, successful businessman and active community leader, Brian will be a tremendous asset to the Dalton community and for northwest Georgia’s future growth,” said Cagle. “I am very grateful for his commitment to serve my office and the invaluable benefit his experience and dedication will bring to the council.”
Anderson is the president and CEO of the Dalton-Whitfield County Chamber of Commerce, a position he has held since 2008. He previously served as chairman of the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners from 2005 through 2008. Anderson has also held marketing management roles with Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and the Dalton Beverage Co. Before starting his business career, Anderson served in the United States Army from 1987 through 1990 as an intelligence officer.
Anderson has maintained an active role in the Dalton community, serving on the Board of Directors for the North Georgia Regional Development Center, Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority, Chief Elected Officers/Workforce Investment Board and the Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership. Past memberships include the North Georgia Metropolitan Planning Organization, Carpet City Rotary Club, the Education is Essential Foundation and Southeast High School’s “Project Success” program. He is also a graduate of Leadership Dalton-Whitfield, Leadership Georgia and the Georgia Academy for Economic Development.
A native of Florence, S.C., Anderson holds an economics degree from Francis Marion University. He and his wife Heather currently live in Dalton with their two children and attend Dalton First United Methodist Church.
Anderson will begin his two-year council term beginning July 1. The council was enacted by the General Assembly passing House Bill 1216 in 2008. The council will be the official regional planning and development organization for the local governments and citizens in its designated region. The council will create policy direction for the area’s short and long-term comprehensive planning and serve as liaison between its regional communities and the state government.

When Karen Smith was born her parents brought her home to 410 Chattanooga Ave., just down the street from Crown Garden and Archives, the primary repository of Dalton’s history where much-needed restorative efforts are under way. Her husband, Michael, grew up a little further south, near the intersection with Selvidge Street.
