Children and teenagers in Whitfield County can play the name game.
The Whitfield County Parks and Recreation Department is holding a contest to name the walking track and nature trails at Edwards Park off Cleveland Highway in north Whitfield County. Trails vary in difficulty and length, with the longest being about two miles.
George Page, county parks and recreation director, said the contest is a way to get kids involved and perhaps interest them in exercise.
“With childhood obesity at an all-time high, what better way to showcase our park than to give the children of Whitfield County a chance to be a part of it?” Page said.
You can submit suggestions on an online form at www.whitfieldcountyga.com. Click on “Name the Trails at Edwards Park Contest and Online Entry Form.” The deadline for submissions is May 11 at midnight. Winners will be chosen by a committee of area residents and county workers.
The payoff? The county will give away five gift certificates from area merchants to the winners (or winner).
There are rules. Those submitting entries must be under the age of 18, reside within Whitfield County including the cities of Cohutta, Dalton, Varnell and Tunnel Hill. Only one entry per child is allowed, but each child in a family can submit an entry. That means each applicant can win up to five times. And parents must sign off on submitting the form.
A survey of residents found that Edwards Park is the most utilized recreation facility in the county. Last year, the county spent $590,200 to complete work at Edwards Park. In addition to the nature and walking trails, the county added a picnic shelter, a playground, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, a basketball court and horseshoe pits.
A celebration of the re-opening of Edwards Park will be May 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Events include a ribbon cutting at the picnic shelter at 9:30 a.m. and a horseshoe tournament at 10 a.m. There will also be basketball, volleyball, tennis and refreshments (coffee, doughnuts and fruit).
