The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office, along with the National Family Partnership, encourages the community to once again take a stand against drugs during Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23–31.
This annual national event helps remind residents how important it is to unite against substance abuse.
“There isn’t a better time to talk to your family and children about the dangers of drugs,” said Sheriff Scott Chitwood. “Drugs ruin lives and rip families apart. It takes the entire community helping our local law enforcement. We alone can’t solve the problem.”
The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered Drug Enforcement Administration agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America.
