Fundraising drive to benefit hospital expansions under way

The Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Hamilton Medical Center, kicked off its annual Westcott Associate fundraising drive this week. Assisting campaign chair Cheryl Baucom with this special fundraising campaign are Sharon Love, Foundation director, and Foundation trustees Kim Brown, Pam Bevil, Jane Boggs, Oliver Cobb and Suzanne Harbin.

Created in 1987, the Foundation’s Westcott Association provides a strong base of annual support for the Foundation from individuals who desire to support the Foundation’s mission by pledging $5,000 payable over the next 10 years. Membership benefits include a personalized plaque, speedy recovery gift upon admission, parking privileges on the hospital campus, and an invitation to special programs and events offered by the Medical Center and the Foundation.

“Funds received from the 2008 Westcott Associate Campaign will be designated to support the Foundation’s $5 million capital campaign goal in support of two important Hamilton Medical Center expansion projects — the Maternal and Infant Care Center and Department of Emergency Care Services,” said Sharon Love, Foundation director. “Both construction projects are expected to be completed this year and will allow Hamilton to provide a new level of effective and high quality health care for citizens in our community as well as accommodate current day technology.”

The Turner Maternal and Infant Care Center expansion includes 33,700 square feet, with 9,500 square feet of new construction, to provide space to accommodate four additional labor and delivery rooms, seven additional postpartum patient rooms, and eight additional bassinets in the normal care newborn nursery.

The Shaw Department of Emergency Care Center expansion includes increasing the existing space from 12,600 to 27,700 square feet, providing space for 35 patient treatment rooms constructed around a centralized nursing station. The emergency expansion will include improvements separating entrances for walk-in patients and patients arriving by ambulance, allowing patients to be triaged efficiently to the most appropriate level of care. Additionally, a new two-level parking plaza will be constructed west of the emergency entrance on Burleyson Road to accommodate 140 vehicles.

“Philanthropic support to the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation keeps health care costs down,” says Baucom. “Each contributed dollar provides the financial integrity and strength to support Hamilton’s response to the changing health care environment. A gift to the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation to benefit these expansion projects is an investment in the quality of life in our community and every gift takes us one step closer to meeting our $5 million goal.”
