Six Dalton men were in the Whitfield County jail Monday on federal charges of conspiracy to possess methamphetamines with the intent to distribute.
The FBI announced the arrests of Antonio Quintero, 25; Rolando Quinonez Godoy, 27; Jesus Meraz, aka Jessie Meraz, 30; Francisco Kiko Meraz, 25; Mario A. Lopez, 24; and Armando Martinez, aka Rogelio Pimentel, 31, all of Dalton.
The arrests resulted from a one and a half year joint investigation between the FBI, the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office and the Dalton Police Department, according to an FBI press release. More arrests are expected.
Sheriff’s Office Maj. John Gibson said the men were in jail awaiting arraignment on the charges. They are scheduled to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on Wednesday in Rome.
Gibson says local authorities will release more information on the arrests today.

Dalton artist talks peacocks
Carpet designer Denise Newton and Dalton Civitan Club member Ray Broadrick hold up a vintage bedspread with a peacock design during a club meeting Wednesday. In the early part of the 20th century such bedspreads were hung for sale on the side of U.S. Highway 41 from the Tennessee state line to Cartersville, earning that stretch of road the nickname Peacock Alley. Denise Newton is a carpet designer with some 30 years in graphic arts. But she’d never painted anything before taking on an assignment to paint a peacock for the Dalton Civitan Club.
