Mose Davis Trio featuring vocalist Theresa Hightower kicks off the Spigel Concert Series

This year’s Spigel Concert Series begins Friday in the Jonas Performance Hall at the Guild and will feature the Atlanta musicians of the Mose Davis Trio with vocalist Theresa Hightower.

This marks the second annual concert series which is sponsored in part by the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia and Wells Fargo, enabling a general admission price of $10 per person with many of the series concerts free.

Lead singer Mose Davis says, “My name is Mose … and you can call me Mose.” That quote from Davis can be heard on Hamilton Bohannon’s hit record “Let’s Start the Dance.” The tune is a smoking-hot club classic. And the quote cuts through the clutter and camouflage of funk wannabes to reveal a pure fact — Mose is Mose.

Before Stevie Wonder, before Bernie Worrell, there was Davis pushing the frontiers of funk with his use of the organ as the source of the bass line, during the late 1960s. And if imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Davis has been flattered by the best. And some of the biggest names in hip-hop have sampled a sip of Mose’ musical brew, including Snoop, Mary J. Bilge and Queen Latifah.

Hightower is regarded as one of the great jazz and blues vocalists of her generation. She is a veteran of concert halls, recordings, cabaret and musical theater. Critics and audiences have marveled at her range, vocal phrasing and exciting live performances. She is one of only a handful of jazz artists — Cleo Laine among them — who have won critical success in the fields of both jazz and musical theater.

For her star-making turn as legendary singer Dinah Washington in the musical “Queen of the Blues,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution called the performance dazzling, riveting, a knock out. Critics and audiences throughout the U.S. gave similar praise to the stars’ performances during the show’s celebrated American tour.

Hightower has served as opening act for such entertainment luminaries as Michael Franks; Oleta Adams; Grammy Award winners The Main Ingredient with lead singer Cuba Gooding Sr.; The Manhattans; Archie Bell and the Drells; Lou Rawls; The Drifters; Bobby Blue Bland; The Stylistics; Sonny Turner (former lead singer of the Platters); and Tony Award winner Ruth Brown, among others. Hightower has appeared in a number of film and television roles, including the TV movie “Made in Heaven” and the series “In the Heat of the Night.”

This year’s lineup includes The Dave Pope Trio with vocalist India Galyean, Atlanta’s Azure McCall, The Etowah Jazz Society, The Brookwoods and Lee Bryan (“That Puppet Guy”). Tickets will be available at the door — $10 for adults and $5 for seniors 65-plus and children.

All concerts begin at 7 p.m. with the exception of Lee Bryan, who will perform at 1 and 3 p.m. Sept. 16 at Festival 2012. Tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Concerts will be held on the Spigel Pavilion, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather the concert(s) will be moved into the Jonas Performance Hall. Attendees are invited to bring their picnics and beverages. Concessions will be available.

New this year will be a special concert featuring Atlanta’s Azure McCall for an evening in the Robert T. Webb Sculpture Garden. A $55 special admission will be available that includes a reserved table for four to eight, cocktails with the artist, dinner and performance. General admission will be available for the performance that begins at 7 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the “Friends of the Garden” fund to maintain the garden. Call the Guild at (706) 278-0168 for more information.
