Varnell ballot will include Sunday alcohol sales

Varnell voters will decide on July 31 whether to allow retail sales of wine and malt beverages on Sunday.

“Our council members feel that you can buy alcohol on Sunday in Dalton and you can buy alcohol on Sunday in Cohutta, so they just wanted to give our stores the ability to compete with those in other municipalities,” said Varnell Mayor Dan Peeples. “They just wanted to make sure that revenue stayed in the city of Varnell.”

The council voted 5-0 to place a referendum on Sunday retail sales on the general primary ballot. Peeples votes only in the event of a tie.

Varnell City Manager Jason Hall says the city currently has six stores that could be affected.

Varnell currently permits the retail sale of malt beverages and wine Monday to Saturday, and it permits the sale of malt beverages, wine and distilled spirits by the drink in restaurants seven days a week.

The state of Georgia banned Sunday retail sales of all alcohol until last year, when the General Assembly voted to allow local governments to put referendums on the ballot on whether to legalize Sunday sales. Cohutta, Dalton and Eton voters approved Sunday retail sales last November.
